The island of Crete is a paradise in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea. An old villager once said “You can plant any seed in the Cretan soil and watch it grow” and over the years I have found this to be true. From olives to avocados to oranges and even bananas, this land has truly been blessed, not only because it produces these fruits, but also because it produces them with such flavor and quality. Ever since Minoan times the people on this island have sustained themselves by eating fresh fruits and vegetables, olive oil, cheese and legumes. It is only natural then, that the people of this land would reap these gifts and adapt them into their diets and in doing so shaping our understanding of what it means to be healthy.
Peter Mihelakis is a Registered Dietitian who lives in Crete, Greece.
